Camille, a reporter for the St. Louis Chronicle, returns to her small town of Wind Gap, Missouri to investigate a string of unsolved murders. Camille has a volatile relationship with her steely mother Adora and is intrigued by her enigmatic half-sister Amma.

Adora is mother to Camille, Amma and the deceased Marian. She’s married to Alan, who dedicates his life to keeping her comfortable. Adora has a troubled relationship with Camille and prefers to dote on young Amma.

Camille’s roommate in a psychiatric ward, teenager Alice helped expand Camille’s taste in music while the two passed the time. 

Adora’s husband, Alan is Amma's father and Camille’s stepdad. Buttoned-up and exceedingly polite, he’s devoted to his wife and biological daughter.

Lover of gossip and spiked sweet tea, Jackie is Wind Gap’s keeper — and occasional spiller — of secrets. Despite a recent falling out with Adora, Jackie is still kind to Camille.

Older brother of deceased Natalie, John is ridiculed by the town for being openly sensitive about his sister’s murder. His popular girlfriend Ashley desperately wants him to fit in. 

Kirk is a teacher at Wind Gap’s middle school. He has a dark history with Camille that still haunts him. 

Marian was Camille's younger, better-behaved sister who passed away as a child. Adora doted on her and now keeps her old bedroom completely intact. 

Marian’s older, more rebellious sister, she tries to provide her comfort as Marian grows sicker. She knows Marian is her mother’s favorite.    

The no-nonsense editor of the St. Louis Chronicle, Curry encourages Camille to return to Wind Gap to cover a string of unsolved murders. Despite his gruff demeanor, he treats Camille like a daughter.    

Stationed from Kansas City to assist with the ongoing murder investigations, Richard is unsure what to make of Wind Gap’s secrets and violent history. He’s intrigued by Camille, who presses him for information about the case.

Father of Anne, who was murdered and left by a creek in the woods. Bob becomes paranoid about who might be responsible for his daughter’s death.    

As the head of Wind Gap police, Vickery is fiercely protective of his town — and deeply suspicious of outside interest, including that from reporter Camille and detective Richard Willis.    

Girlfriend of John Keene, Ashley is a high school cheerleader and admirer of Camille, whom she attempts to use to her social advantage.    

Popular at school and the center of attention at home, Amma is used to getting what she wants, whenever she wants it. Her interest is piqued by her distant half-sister Camille, who’s in town to investigate a string of unsolved murders.
